This Accident Changed Aviation Forever | The Terrifying Story Of Delta Flight 191
0:00 On the afternoon of Friday, August the 2nd, 1985, passengers were arriving as normal at Delta Airlines gates at Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport. And they did so in order to board flight 191 that was going to take them over towards Los Angeles…
5:45 After a brief exchange, the controller approved a revised route farther to the north, allowing the crew to remain clear of this particular weather. And a few moments later, the captain remarked that he was glad that they had not been sent through that mess.
12:08 When the captain switched over to the new frequency and checked in, he merrily said that they were out here in the rain feels good.
17:50 Over the next few seconds the indicated airspeed increased from its target of 150 knots to more than 160 and it then continued climbing up to a peak of 173 knots while at the same point they started to drift above the glide slope.
23:49 it could also potentially overspeed the flaps, who would be configured for landing at that point. So the natural response would therefore be to reduce the thrust in order to try and reduce the speed and stabilize the approach again, which was exactly what…
30:13 So, back on board flight 191, the situation now continued deteriorating so fast that the crew was struggling to comprehend it. As the airplane proceeded into the microburst downdraft in a nose-high attitude with low engine thrust, the headwind now suddenly…
37:30 Ahead lay Texas State Highway 114, one of the busiest roads serving the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where the drivers, making their evening commute, now had only seconds to react as the widebody airliner burst out from the wall of rain directly in front of them.…
43:32 So, every time a controller now issues a microburst warning, every time an airliner receives a predictive windshear alert before entering a storm, and every time a crew instinctively advances the thrust levers to maximum power and flies a windshear escape…
