Pieter Brantegem «Brussels Airlines Cadet Program with Skywings»
De video presenteert het MPL-cadetprogramma van Brussels Airlines en Skywings. Peter, Vincent en Jeremy leggen selectie, opleiding en loopbaan uit.
De presentatie begint met de voorstelling van Peter, CEO van Skywings Flight Training in Antwerpen, Vincent Ferbiste, first officer bij Brussels Airlines en verantwoordelijk voor de coördinatie van het MPL-programma, en Jeremy Rooms, captain op de A330 en pilot selection manager. Na een korte film geeft Jeremy een overzicht van Brussels Airlines als home carrier in Brussel met Belgische achtergrond, ontstaan uit Sabena en nu onderdeel van de Lufthansa Group.
Brussels Airlines en vloot
Jerry? no Jeremy noemt meer dan 3500 medewerkers en een groeiende maatschappij. Hij zegt dat er ongeveer 1500 cabin crew leden zijn en rond 630 cockpit crew, bijna gelijk verdeeld tussen captains en first officers. Volgens hem is circa 10 procent van de pilots vrouw, het hoogste percentage binnen de Lufthansa Group. De vloot bestaat volledig uit Airbus-toestellen: A319 voor short- en medium-haul, A320 en A320neo voor short- en medium-haul, en A330 voor long-haul. De A320neo-fleet groeit met gemiddeld één of twee nieuwe toestellen per jaar. Voor de A330 wordt over enkele jaren mogelijk een typeverandering naar A330neo, 787 of A350 verwacht. In het MPL-programma start men op de short- en medium-haul-fleet.
MPL-programma en selectie
Peter legt uit dat Skywings door Brussels Airlines is gekozen voor het MPL-cadetprogramma. De MPL vormt een driehoek tussen Skywings, Brussels Airlines en de A320-familie. De opleiding is gericht op multi-pilot flying en gebruikt procedures van Brussels Airlines. Voor toepassing zijn minimaal 17 jaar, een middelbareschooldiploma, een blank criminal record, het recht om in de EU te wonen en te studeren, Engels en Nederlands of Frans vereist; bij voorkeur spreekt men een beetje van beide. De selectie wordt gedeeltelijk door Skywings en Brussels Airlines uitgevoerd. Bij Skywings volgen kandidaten technische toetsen in wiskunde, natuurkunde en Engels, plus een compass test voor motorische en psychotechnische vaardigheden. Bij Brussels Airlines volgen online personalitytests en cognitive tests, een HR-interview met iemand van de flight operations department, begeleid door een aviation psychologist en clinical psychologist, en een group exercise. Daarna volgt bij Skywings een simulator work sample test. Een EASA Class 1 medical is verplicht vóór de start van de opleiding.
Opleiding, kosten en loopbaan
Peter zegt dat de MPL-opleiding ongeveer 19 tot 22 maanden duurt. De theorie duurt achtënhalf tot negen maanden in Antwerpen. Daarna volgt praktische training: eerst drie maanden single engine aircraft op een fair weather base in Spanje, daarna IFR-training in multi-pilot setting op de A320-simulator in Antwerpen. De type rating wordt samengesteld met Brussels Airlines en afgerond met landing training en touch-and-go's op een echte Airbus A320 of A319. Vincent beschrijft de loopbaan: na afstuderen heeft Brussels Airlines vijf jaar tijd om iemand aan te nemen als first officer. Men start op de A320 medium-haul-fleet. Na ongeveer zeven jaar kan men doorgroeien naar captain op short- of medium-haul, of naar first officer op de A330-fleet; wie die laatste route kiest, wordt daarna eerst captain op short- of medium-haul en uiteindelijk captain op long-haul. Peter noemt een kostprijs van 99.500 euro, betaald in drie termijnen. Belfuse biedt pilot financing aan. De nieuwe vacature opent rond eind september na Sanicole Airshow. Promotion 3 is gesloten, promotion 4 volgt later dit jaar. Brussels Airlines staat bij Lufthansa en Skywings heeft een eigen stand.
