Human Factors onderzoek

Beste Airworkers,

The purpose of this research was to explore the relationship between safety culture and organisational commitment among commercial airline pilots, with distinction of Low Cost Carrier (LCC) and Full Service Carrier (FSC) pilots. The necessity of this research lies in the fact that no other published work has studied the differences of safety culture perception and organisational commitment between LCC and FSC pilots. The objectives of this research were threefold: To explore whether there is a relation between safety culture and organisational commitment; to explore whether there is a difference in safety culture perception between LCC and FSC pilots; and to explore whether there is a difference in organisational commitment between pilots of the two types of carriers.
It was argued that LCC pilots would score lower on organisational commitment due to their lower pay, lower status and lower leave entitlements compared to FSC pilots. The relationship between safety culture and organisational commitment was already known from previous research. Therefore, a lower perception of safety culture among LCC pilots was a reasonable assumption. The present results have showed that LCC pilots score substantially lower on both safety culture perception as on organisational commitment than FSC pilots. In particular, LCC pilots score lower on affective commitment compared to FSC pilots.
A decade ago, Sexton and Klinect (2001) made clear in his research that pilots’ perception of safety culture is related to safety performance. Job attitudes (encompasses morale, which is level of satisfaction with organisation; and job satisfaction) held by flight crew were related to safety-relevant practices in the cockpit. Negative perceptions were associated with sub-optimal safety practices and performance, and positive perceptions reflected above average performance. At present, this study has expanded on this topic and the results suggest that the relation between organisational commitment, and especially affective commitment, and safety culture is strong. LCC pilots scored considerably lower on organisational commitment than FSC pilots.
The implications of organisational commitment range from a reduction in withdrawal behaviours to an increase in extra-role behaviours on behalf of the organisation (Mathieu and Zajac, 1990; Meyer and Allen, 1991). Organisational commitment has a direct positive influence on employees’ work motivation and measures of job performance (Mathieu and Zajac, 1990).

Hallo Selma,
