The business jet, an Eclips 500 aircraft, was flying from Lanseria to Cape Town when it lost all communications with air traffic control. As a result, the South African Air Force was notified and scrambled a Gripen fighter jet to intercept the aircraft, which was flying in a holding pattern in the Riviersonderend area at a height of 37,500 feet (11,430 meters).

"The Gripen pilot tried to establish communications and followed the aircraft. The aircraft was in a spiral and crashed in a narrow ravine 8 km south of the N2 between Caledon and Swellendam," the air force said in a statement. "The aircraft disintegrated on impact and no post-impact fire was observed. The AFB Overberg Fire and Rescue Services are now in the process to assist a rescue team."

Even op een cynische noot: dat valt me nog mee dat het zolang geduurd heeft voordat een privé eigenaar in een rokend gat eindigt met een Eclipse.
