The party is over ?
United stopped hiring
Delta stopped hiring
Continental stopped hiring
Northwest stopped hiring
Expressjet stopped hiring
Skywest stopped hiring
ASA stopped hiring
FedEx stopped hiring
UPS has stopped hiring
Expressjet is offering pilots unpaid leave of absences
United is grounding 15-20 737 aircraft
Delta is grounding 10? mainline aircraft
Northwest is grounding 24 DC-9 aircraft
Regional flying has been cut substantially
Comair, Skywest, Expressjet, ASA, Mesa, and others have had their regional contracted flying hours cut.
Frontier sold 4 aircraft
Jetblue sold 6 aircraft
Kittyhawk went out of business
Maxjet went out of business
Focus went out of business
Skybus went of of business
Big Sky went out of business
Skyway went out of business
Aloha went out of business
Champion Air went out of business
ATA went out of business
Of, ieder ander, die “in the know” is?

But we will see i guess..

DAL will take a loss on Comair (no buyers), and they will disappear, allowing DAL to post a huge hit on it's balance sheet and force a "the sky is falling" scenario on it's employees. If they can't succeed in forcing labor groups to merge with NWA, they will dip into BK in the next 2 years.
UAL and CAL will raise it's head again and XJET will be the lucky loser.
MESA is going to lose it's appeal in Hawaii and suffer another huge one in court, when Aloha gets it's day!
MESA will go into BK and will disappear, as even UAL leaves it twisting in the wind!
SkyWest will slow down, but will force any hits that it has to take on ASA. Overall, SkyWest will be fine.
RAH has already started pulling away from the 50 seat market and this will accelerate.
Colgan will grow with the Q400 and will expand it to UAL and others.
I am seeing this whole thing as a "market correction" art. "vraag en aanbood". It was long overdue for some (bs carriers like skybus) to go tits up. Regionals will keep hiring, for the most part due to attrition, less and less people are going to flightschool, cargo companies will keep growing, so the sky is not falling yet... We just got started in our "7 years up" cycle here, and I am not seeing this coming to an end any time soon. Plenty of jobs available still this side of the pond. LCC's are still hurting for people, all cargo outfits (big and small) will have to keep hiring as well for the next few years at least.

Economic Meltdown
Unfortunately what we have seen so far is only the tip of iceberg IMHO.
A lot of people still don't realise how close to disaster things came with the Bear Stearns fiasco. This could have (and still may) trigger a complete collapse of the US Banking system.
It's like a row of dominoes - once the first one goes all the rest go as well. Collapse of one Bank will trigger a run on the rest - they will be unable to meet their obligations.
The Economic malaise will definitely move East IMHO - the strong Euro is already causing problems.
How bad is it going to get? That's the question no-one can answer because nobody knows how bad the credit problems really are.
Personal opinion - it's going to be a rough ride. Least affected region will be Asia.
For the Aviation Industry - both US and Europe will see a declining market with a number of bankruptcies. A lot of people are going to lose their jobs. In Asia growth will continue albeit at a slower pace (infrastructure development needs to catch up in a lot of countries). Expect to job market to shift East where there will remain a demand for experienced people.

Inderdaad Art,
Je hebt helemaal gelijk. 8 Airlines in bijna 3 months.
Amerika is in ieder geval not the place to be voor een junior pilot bij een major airline.
Cheers,

DENVER, April 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Frontier Airlines Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq: FRNT - News) today announced that, following an unexpected attempt by its principal credit card processor to substantially increase a "holdback" of customer receipts, which threatened to severely impact Frontier's liquidity, Frontier and its subsidiaries have filed voluntary petitions for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.
Frontier intends to continue normal business operations today and throughout its reorganization process. Specifically, it expects to continue to:
-- Operate its full schedule of flights;
-- Honor tickets and reservations and provide refunds and exchanges as
usual;
-- Maintain its EarlyReturns frequent flyer program and other award-
winning customer service programs;
-- Provide employee wages, healthcare coverage, vacation, sick leave and
similar benefits without interruption; and,
-- Pay suppliers for goods and services received during the reorganization
process.
"Frontier is committed to delivering exceptional customer service and we intend to continue delivering on that promise with normal operations throughout our reorganization process," said Sean Menke, Frontier President and CEO. "To be clear, we filed for very different reasons than those of other recent carriers, and our customers and employees can be confident that we intend to keep on flying and providing outstanding service and products.
"Given the recent progress we have made towards strengthening our balance sheet and obtaining additional financing, it is truly unfortunate that we have had to take this action," Menke said. "We felt that Frontier would be able to withstand the challenges confronting the U.S. airline industry, which include unprecedented and significant increases in the cost of jet fuel and the impact of the credit crisis in the financial markets, without seeking bankruptcy protection. Frontier has continued to perform relatively well in this difficult environment, and contrary to the trend, we have not seen a decrease in consumer demand, as demonstrated by our record traffic and revenue in March. Unfortunately, our principal credit card processor, very recently and unexpectedly informed us that, beginning on April 11, it intended to start withholding significant proceeds received from the sale of Frontier tickets. This change in established practices would have represented a material change to our cash forecasts and business plan. Unchecked, it would have put severe restraints on Frontier's liquidity and would have made it impossible for us to continue normal operations. The automatic stay provision of the bankruptcy code prohibits the credit card processor from increasing its holdback, and we are prepared to litigate this issue if necessary.
"By filing for Chapter 11, we will now have the time and legal protection necessary to obtain additional financing and enhance our liquidity. Fortunately, we believe that we currently have adequate cash on hand to meet our operating needs while we take steps to further strengthen our company."
Frontier's Chapter 11 cases were filed today in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. Frontier is filing motions with the Court seeking interim relief that will ensure the Company's continued ability to conduct normal operations, including the ability to:
-- Provide employee wages, healthcare coverage, vacation, sick leave and
similar benefits without interruption.
-- Honor pre-petition obligations to customers and continue customer
programs including its EarlyReturns frequent-flyer program.
-- Pay for fuel under existing fuel supply contracts, and honor existing
fuel supply, distribution and storage agreements.
-- Assume contracts relating to interline agreements with other airlines.
-- Pay pre-petition obligations to foreign vendors, foreign service
providers and foreign governments.
-- Continue maintenance of existing bank accounts and existing cash
management systems.
-- Use its existing cash on hand to fund post-petition obligations.
Frontier's principal bankruptcy counsel is Davis Polk & Wardwell.

And there you have it.
And till there will be blood there will be pain.
Mijn twee Ringits.
Cheers

Lang verhaal kort, the end justifies the means ?

Plain and simple.
Cheers.
