Fake pilot takes SriLankan Airlines for a ride
Civil Aviation authorities yesterday revoked the licence of a SriLankan Airlines flight captain after it was revealed that the man was a fake, a top official said. Civil Aviation Director General Parakrama Dissanayake said the pilot, a German national, had gained employment with the airlines, producing cleverly-doctored documents.
He said the decision to revoke the licence was taken after Sri Lankan Airline submitted clear evidence which suggested that the suspect had forged documents regarding his qualifications and experience.
Mr. Dissanayake said the man was later summoned to the Civil Aviation Authority office for an inquiry conducted by senior flight officers. It was thereafter decided to revoke the license with immediate effect.
The German national joined the national carrier in 2007 and had piloted flights to various capitals, risking the lives of thousands of passengers and crew as well as many others on the ground, SriLankan Airlines sources said. They said the suspect had not only possessed a forged pilot license but also carried three different passports.
It has now been revealed that the man was not a qualified airline captain but a low ranking flight officer and not eligible to pilot an Airbus A 340.
During his stay with SriLankan Airlines he had flown the Airbus A 340 that touched down in many busy airports such as Heathrow, Frankfurt, Paris and Dubai, the sources said.

hehe tja shit happends.

In a statement, the SriLankan Airlines said yesterday that this particular employee, holds a valid Airline Transport Pilot’s license from the Civil Aviation Authority of the Federal Republic of Germany, which endorsed his rating as a Captain on the Airbus A340, A330 and A320 aircraft. This license is in accordance with the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the global governing body of the industry It also said that prior to joining the SriLankan Airlines in October 2007, he had worked for European, Asian and Middle Eastern airlines. However, the pilot had submitted a false document in order to satisfy a criteria specific to SriLankan which stipulates that directly recruited Captains require 1000 hours of flying experience as a captain on a particular aircraft.
On July 22 the SriLankan Airlines received information that this employee had not held a captain’s post in the airline he was employed at immediately prior to joining the SriLankan. A clarification of this information was sought by the SriLankan Airlines from his previous employer who replied with a confirmation of the information the next day. The pilot was dismissed after a formal inquiry held by the airline on July 23. The airline has informed the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka about this incident, it added.
Was geen flightsimmer

I don't really know any more than what was published in the papers. Haven't talked to any Management Pilots.
I do know the "Captain" in question. Nice enough guy but gave a strange impression - although there are plenty of strange guys in the contract world :).
Don't know his current status but I believe he was arrested.
Problem is that at the moment they are desperate for Pilots (short about 35 Captains for 14 aircraft). I don't think they normally check references too closely. Plenty of unscrupulous people out there looking for a quick rating or upgrade.
There are 2 categories of Expats:-
1. People who are Expats because their last Airline went bankrupt.
2. People who are Expats because nobody else will touch them.
My colleagues are in the first category. We had a few guys from the second category but they normally get fired.
