A positive point: the houses are cheap, because nobody wants to live there!

Well i was looking at a 30/45 min commute from the south of Den Helder.

Then you will be ok, Alkmaar is a nice town, and there are some nice villages in the neighbourhood of alkmaar as well, Bergen, Schoorl etc, thats all 30-45 mins drive, Schagen is a little closer to Den Helder, but pretty nice as well.
