In die docu wordt de president gevolgd tijdens de onderhandelingen over het klimaat (zeg maar kyoto). Hij stelt daar dat zonder actie de malediven zeer spoedig ook "down under" zijn; under water.

En dan komt Ger met floats ;)

Ja OJJO29, will fly for food is nooit mijn standpunt geweest, en met zo´n rare foto bij je naam zal ook niet echt helpen, maar goed dit even terzijde !!

Ik ben aangenomen binnen een week na sollicitatie.

Nog even voor een ieder the minimum requirements for FO van Maladivian Air Taxi !!

Maldivian CPL with Multi-Engine Rating or ICAO CPL with Multi Engine Instrument Rating
Seaplane rating (single engine float rating is adequate);
Current ICAO Class 1 medical; and
Minimum Company education level requirements or ATPL written exams and 1500 hours total flight experience

I don't live in the Maldives. I have had a lot of layovers there in the past. I fly in and out of Malé several times/month usually to/from London Heathrow.

I do know people flying for MAT and they have told me how things are.

Some considerations:-

You live on the main island (Malé City) and take a boat over to the airport on the next island over (Hulhule island).

Main island is quite small - took me 40 minutes to walk all the way around it.

Islamic country - no alcohol allowed except on the resorts and in the hotel bar at the airport. No night life except for the bar at the airport hotel.

You start work at sunrise and finish at sunset. Day VFR operation. Guys fly up to 16 sectors/day. Some overnights at the resorts. Guys are working 6 days/week.

MAT used to rotate Pilots in and out on a fixed roster pattern. This was while Kenn Borek Air out of Calgary ran the operation. MAT is now Maldivian owned/operated so I'm not sure what the status of this is.

After the novelty wears off you are very limited in what you can do/where you can go.

Weather is either really good or really bad. There are almost always CB's in the area.

I'm sitting at 4 go-arounds and 1 diversion at this airport. The last go-around was from an ILS where at 200' the rain was so heavy I couldn't see anything in front of me.

I will contact someone who works there and see what the latest is.

This is what I received from my friend.

Ya am back with my old company TMA, its much better,more money train capt ect.,lots of crew,we are fully crewed and not looking.
MAT, heheh, well thats a different story, its a night mare and not getting any better,wont bore u with all the details.
Good thing for young f/o, very busy will get lots of hrs.,if any good will get captain upgrade as soon as has the required hrs.
Housing ok,once gets there so many guys come and go he can upgrade to better place.
MLE, well its fucked up muslim place but safe and wont matter cus working or sleeping,nothing else to do.
Like I say for young f/o with right attitude its the best,wish I could have started there in my 20's.

From what I have seen and heard this is a job for single guys in their 20's. I have not heard of anyone living there with a family.

vwb een training manual, zou je eens SAMCO in Maastricht kunnen contacten. Zij hadden toen der tijd (begin deze eeuw) nog een aantal Twin Otters. Wellicht dat zij nog ergens in een bibliotheek manuals hebben die nu niets meer doen dan stof happen.

Leaving tomorrow for Male. Have spoken to the CP, he says MAT is still looking for mature and experienced individuals (not neccesarily on floats) who want to start as FO.
I am sure as hell gonna give it a try !!

Hoi Gerrit,

Ik was afgelopen week in ons crewhotel op Male (Hulhule Island Hotel) en zoals altijd was het weer goed voor een ontspannen layover. Naast mijn ligbedje waren 2 twotterjockies aan het praten over de MAT en het was niet echt positief (en dat is een understatement). Ik bewonder je hang naar avontuur, maar ik denk dat de schoonheid van het vliegen daar snel omslaat in verveling en dat je echt niet meer doet dan vliegen, slapen en biertjes drinken in bovengenoemd hotel (er is nergens anders bier te krijgen nl).

As promised, I would keep you all updated.
Bin here now for 3 months and everything is just great, no complaints except the fact that its not easy and certainly not cheap to get a cool beer or chilled glass of white wine !
MAT is a great employer with a well organized HR and Management team.
After initial training on the Otter and Airlaw exam you get 100 hours line indoc training. Finished that today, which means that now I can fly with anyone going to every resort. Flying floats is great and it takes time to get comfortable flying from the right seat. Capt flies one leg, you fly the other. The only thing you do not do as FO is start the engines. Had to sign a 2 year bond of 24.000 USD.
Salary is approx 2500 USD a month, no taxes paid. I am living in a brand new appartment in Hulhumale, all paid for by MAT. Medical insurance paid by MAT.
Fly approx 80 hours a month, work is 5 days on, 2 days off. Overnights at 5-STAR resorts at least once a week (Free food and yes, a cool beer for 4 USD).
3 MONTHS ON 1 MONTH (PAID) OFF. Airline tickets paid by MAT.
