You have a compassionate and resilient community here at Virginia Tech," Bush told the crowd at the school's arena, urging them to lean on families, churches and each other.
"People who have never met you are praying for you," Bush added.
Before leaving Washington, Bush declared a national day of mourning and ordered flags across the nation to be flown at half-staff. He received a status report on the investigation from university President Charles Steger and other school officials just before the ceremony.
The president and first lady Laura Bush flew to Blacksburg aboard Air Force One along with Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine. During the ceremony, Kaine praised the student body for its "sense of unity" in the face of tragedy.
"There are deep emotions that are called forth by a tragedy as significant as this — grievance and sadness by the boatload," he said. He called on Virginia Tech students, faculty, alumni and staff to unite in support of each other.
"This is a remarkable place. Do not let go of the sense of community that is so powerful in this room," Kaine said.
The arena where the ceremony was held was nearly filled with mourners wearing the orange and maroon colors of Virginia Tech. Steger, under fire for the university's response to the first of Monday's two shooting incidents, received a long and loud round of applause when he spoke.
"In the last day, I've expressed my horror and shock, but there are no words to truly express the depth of sadness we feel. In fact, words are weak symbols of our true emotions at times such as this," he said. "We are extremely grateful that you here in the audience today have come to help us and to help each other."
Several members of the local religious community also spoke at the convocation, and university officials again urged students to take advantage of available counseling services if desired.
"We feel violated and are filled with sadness and grief, yet in our hearts, we know somehow we must move forward, no matter how painful those steps are, " Jacob Lutz III, rector of the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors, told the audience.
Steger said a candlelight vigil would be held on campus Tuesday night.
After observing silence for those lost, some wept as the band played "Amazing Grace." They then recited the Lord's Prayer.
The convocation was filled, even though many students have gone home.
"Students ... don't be concerned right now about how your academic situations will play out," said Dean of Students Tom Brown. "Please, please take care of yourselves first. Go to where you need to go where you have the most love and the best support."
A student affairs faculty member will be assigned to each family that has lost a loved one, Brown said.
Classes were canceled for the rest of the week. Norris Hall, the classroom building where most of the victims were shot, will be closed for the rest of the semester.
Many students were leaving town quickly, lugging pillows, sleeping bags and backpacks down the sidewalks.
Jessie Ferguson, 19, a freshman from Arlington, left Newman Hall and headed for her car with tears streaming down her red cheeks.
"I'm still kind of shaky," she said. "I had to pump myself up just to kind of come out of the building. I was going to come out, but it took a little bit of 'OK, it's going to be all right. There's lots of cops around."'
Although she wanted to be with friends, she wanted her family more. "I just don't want to be on campus," she said.

Take a chill pil there Mr. Ihateamerica.

Hij was legaal (refuge I guess).

'To kill people'.

Het is een vreselijk cliche maar nog steeds waar;
" Guns don't kill people, people do...."
